Tonsils refers to two oval shaped mass of lymphatic tissue lying at the back of the throat, one on the either side. These play a role in the immune system serving as a first line of defence to fight against pathogens (like virus, bacteria) that get inhaled or ingested. But in this process they too can get infected and inflamed termed as tonsillitis. In case of acute tonsillitis the tonsils become enlarged, red and inflamed. This may progress to follicular tonsillitis in which the crypts (tube like invaginations from the surface epithelium of tonsils) get filled with debris and pus. It presents as yellow or white spots at the opening of the crypts on the tonsils which gives follicular appearance. Homeopathic remedies for follicular tonsillitis help reduce inflammation, swelling, redness of the tonsils as well as pus points. In case of chronic follicular tonsillitis the crypts get filled with infected cheesy matter.

It can arise from viral (most common) or bacterial infections. Some viral agents that are involved in it include adenovirus, influenza virus, rhinovirus, Epstein Barr virus (EBV) and parainfluenza virus. The main bacteria that cause it is Streptococcus pyogenes that causes strep throat. Some other less common bacterial agents that can cause it are streptococcus pneumoniae, chlamydia pneumoniae and mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Children of school age group who tend to spend more time with other same age grouped kids are at risk of frequent exposure to viruses or bacteria that can cause tonsillitis. Children between age 5 yrs to 15 yrs are most at risk of bacterial tonsillitis. Tonsillitis is rare in babies less than 1 year of age and also those above 50 years of age.
In these cases initially high temperature (between 102 to 104 degree fahrenheit) occurs which is accompanied with chill. Along with this headache, loss of appetite and pain in the bone of limbs is usually felt. The tonsillitis signs and symptoms get prominent between 6 to 12 hrs after the infection. In this there occur redness and swelling of the tonsils, pain in the throat that may extend to the ear, a sensation of foreign body in the throat and fullness on swallowing. Tongue may be coated and can be attended with bad odour from the mouth. There can also be swelling and tenderness of the neck glands. Following this the inflammation extends to the pharynx and uvula, elongation of uvula may also appear, whitish spots form on the tonsils, throat becomes dry, increase in the throat pain occurs that is worse during deglutition. The acute follicular tonsillitis may progress to the next stage called acute membranous tonsillitis (in this the exudation from the crypts join in together to form a membrane on the tonsil surface).
