How Eucalyptus Works to Clear Sinuses, Congestion, and Boost Immunity . . . and a Recipe to Help with All 3!
Eucalyptus essential oil is on a mission to help people breathe easier.
And there’s no one better for the job!
Eucalyptus is a master at clearing congestion, reducing mucus, and calming inflammation. It even knows how to support immunity.
But do you really know how Eucalyptus works to clear sinuses and help us feel better? Is it a secret?
Nope! Not a secret! Just science. It’s largely about the main component in Eucalyptus essential oil—1,8-cineole. 1,8-cineole plays a big part in Eucalyptus’s great reputation.
Now you’re in on the “secret” of how Eucalyptus works!
Going forward, whenever you see that 1,8-cineole is a main component in an essential oil, you can make a great guess that the oil will be useful for sinuses and respiratory health, just like Eucalyptus.
A big part of how Eucalyptus works is by supporting immunity.
I want to share a way to use Eucalyptus essential oil in a nourishing, sinus-clearing steam that feels so supportive when you have a cold or the flu.
If you’ve been traveling or exposed to someone who is sick, or if you just feel like your health is a little vulnerable, you can do a steam like this 1–2 times a day, for about three days.
If you do happen to come down with a cold or the flu (no fun!), you can use the steam 2–3 times a day for a few more days to help calm your symptoms.
This recipe for a “stock blend” comes from my book, The Heart of Aromatherapy: An Easy-to-Use Guide for Essential Oils.
It’s made in a 5 ml amber bottle.
What you’ll do is blend the essential oils in the bottle, then when you want to do a steam, you’ll use JUST 1 DROP in a bowl of warm, steamy water. Since there are 36 drops of essential oil in this, you can do 36 steams (although sometimes it can be hard to get those last few drops out of the bottle, so it might be more like 30 steams).
Eucalyptus’s “Best Decongest” Steam Blend
- 12 drops Eucalyptus essential oil (Eucalyptus globulus)
- 9 drops Thyme ct. linalool essential oil (Thymus vulgaris ct. linalool)
- 8 drops Tea Tree essential oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)
- 7 drops Juniper Berry essential oil (Juniperus communis)
To do a steam, all you have to do is put a single drop of this blend into a bowl of steamy water.
Then close your eyes (don’t forget that part!) and lean over the bowl, breathing the nourishing warm steam slowly and deeply.
You can concentrate the steam around you by draping a towel over your head. Just be sure to keep your eyes closed!
Each of these oils in this blend works a little differently.
All four can help clear congestion in sinuses and support immunity in their own ways.
For example, Tea Tree’s main component is terpinen-4-ol . . . it’s different than 1,8-cineole, and very effective!
So in each drop of our stock recipe, we get a nuanced aroma and a blend that boosts our health from multiple angles.
